These images describe the scene so much better than I ever could. Kolkata, or Calcutta as most people still know it is proving to be an amazing, amazing city.
These pictures were taken at the Mullik Ghat flower market, which is located adjacent to the Hooghly River (I thought it was the actual Ganges, but it is a tributary – really must try to work out where I am) and under the Howrah Bridge.
I’m here on cricket business and with two hours to spare my boss took me and a couple of colleagues down to the market to have a wander through one afternoon.
Flowers are sold by weight and are used in religious festivals, for wedding parties and just about everything. You can even buy flower petals by volume.

I always associate marigolds with India, I remember as a child being draped in garlands of them for just about every occasion possible. I’d love to see this market, I bet it was amazing. I wonder if you’ll be able to link up a post to #AllAboutFrance (from Indai) tomorrow…
So many fascinating things here in India. I’m still taking endless photos of the Ambassador taxis as well.
aaagh, India not Indai!! Why do I always spot typos having pressed “post comment”?!
My husband was there this weekend for cricket but didn’t see this #citytripping
My husband was there this weekend for cricket but didn’t see this #citytripping great pics
Then he must have been at Eden Gardens – one of my favourite cricket stadium(s). If he goes again he should try to get to the markets if only to take photos 🙂
It looks so chaotic and colourful in equal measure. I’d love to visit and soak up the atmoshphere #CityTripping
Thanks Fiona. It is certainly not for the faint hearted! Chaos is a good word – and we only saw a part of it.
It looks so colourful and bustling. I’ve seen flower markets like this in India but never this big!
The colours are amazing, and contrast with all the commerce. Flowers are sold by weight!
Those are so beautiful- what incredible colours, like sunshine in flower form. Amazing to wander round and see them being sold. #citytripping
Yes, the colours are amazing. And to be sold by weight! Thanks for dropping by.
I visited this flower market in 2015 but it was in the evening when most of the flower sellers had already left except for a handful. My host and I were walking down to the ghats to take a photo of Howrah Bridge, thus we walked past through this market. Hope you enjoyed your stay in Kolkata 🙂 #citytripping
The Howrah Bridge is very photogenic! Especially in the evening. I hope you got some nice photos :). I love Kolkata, and hope to explore it a bit more.
Fantastic, colourful photos! What a wonderful experience to visit this market. I love travel moments like this #citytripping
Thanks Wander Mum :). In Kolkata there is a photo opportunity every time you turn the corner. Wonderful city that I always enjoy.
